In recent years, indoor positioning has emerged as a critical function in many end-user applications; including military, civilian, disaster relief and peacekeeping missions. IPS does not suffer the disadvantages and limitations of indoor GPS implementations. Ultra Wide-Band Indoor Positioning Systems (UWB IPS) are not hampered by large stadiums or arenas that often contain physical barriers that block satellite transmission. IPS is free from interference from the multitude of airwave signals in most sports venues, meaning no drop-outs caused by numerous personal devices. IPS is not affected by the inevitable WIFI congestion and bandwidth limits that plague today's GPS-based Sports Performance Tracking Technologies.

Daniel Tobin, Head of Fitness at Leinster Rugby, analyzed current GPS tracking systems regarding their precision. The alarming result: 378% overestimation of in-game collisions and no correlative data for sprint measurements. “We need valid data on collisions and sprints, as this is what Rugby and Football are all about”, stressed Tobin. This view confirms the Kinexon approach to develop a cutting-edge radio frequency technology that meets the highest demands in terms of precision and robustness. One of the key features of the technology is a tracking accuracy of below 10cm – even in challenging indoor environments.
KINEXON recently applied for a patent for its complex positioning for sports system for athlete player training and tracking. Sensors are attached directly to players wearing light, non-obtrusive garments. Wireless Base-stations display position in a 3-dimensional space and transmit it to tablets on the sidelines, in the clubhouse, or throughout the training facility.
The Kinexon LPS can be used indoors or outdoors. It also has a portable version. The System position accuracy is less than 6 inches due to its Ultra Wide Band (UWB) technology with at least 20 Hz resolution. The sensor on the athlete includes an accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer. The highly accurate positioning system in coordination with the data from the other sensor components provides coaches a well-rounded and accurate movement data set. This data accurately defines the location of events such as jumps and accelerations as well as measures distances, speeds, detailed jump performance, decelerations, and loads. It does require a dedicated Wifi channel but only works through wifi on a local Kinexon system server which runs the entire system.
